Water testing is one of the most important things you can do for the health of you and the residents of your household. In 1974, Congress passed the Safe Drinking Water Act as a response to increased amounts of man-made chemicals being found in the public’s water supply. Since then, drinking water has been closely monitored on state and national levels. However, if you plan to move into a house in Northwest Indiana that sources its water from a private well, you should contact someone to have your supply tested for these dangerous chemicals every few years.
At Certified Home Inspections, we can have your water tested for:
- Bacteria (total coliforms and E. Coli)
- Nitrates/Nitrites
- Lead
These are the three most common threats to your drinking supply. We can also request that your samples be tested for:
- Hardness
- E. coli Enumeration
- Heterotrophic Plate Count (identifies amount of heterotrophic microorganisms in water)
We will have your samples tested using methods in accordance to National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit reporting and Indiana State Water reporting. During the water inspection, we usually draw our samples from areas of main use within the house. We must first disinfect the faucets, and after we collect the water sample, we will follow the proper procedures for storage time and temperature. The sample will be taken to a local lab, which will take two days to process the test. The lab will then email you the results, whereupon you can take proper action if any threat is found in your drinking supply. It is important for Northwest Indiana residents to check their drinking supply because it directly affects your basic health needs. A simple water inspection can help prevent a potentially severe infection caused by E. Coli. Nitrates and nitrites are especially threatening for infants, and can lead to methemoglobinemia, or “blue baby syndrome.” Lead is a toxic chemical that enters the water supply through the corrosion of pipes and sink fixtures and faucets. Contact us to make sure your home’s drinking water is safe, and we’ll get you answers in just a matter of days.
